Glass operations

To make glass parts, a wide range of glass operations are used and combined in-house at Contour.

Glass bending

Glass here deforms in one direction similar to the way a sheet of paper can be bent. As a simple bend, an angled conversion but this can also be a more complex bending. The glass is placed in an oven on a pre-formed mould. After controlled heating to about 600°C, the glass softens and slowly begins to deform until it takes on the shape of the mould. Once the glass reaches the desired depth, it is cooled to room temperature over several hours.

Glass sagging

Glass deformation in three dimensions: 3D. To deform the glass in 3 directions when sagging, it must be heated to a much higher temperature than when bending. The glass then sags by gravity, always creating a clear and natural bulge.


Applications of sagged glass include:

Curved safety glass

Tempering makes the glass 5x stronger. In addition, toughened glass is more resistant to high temperatures. If the glass does break, it breaks into small blurred pieces, also making it safer to use.

Dimensions: up to approx. 80x40cm

In many cases, we can also toughen small sizes of flat glass. Dimensions smaller than 30x30cm to even as small as 5x5cm can be processed well in our toughening furnace.


Some applications of curved safety glass are:

  • Glass in outdoor lighting,

  • Catering products, including glass pan lids

  • Vehicle headlights made of glass,

  • Vehicle sliding windows,

  • Glass machine shielding,

  • Glass displays

  • Curved glass cabinet doors

Melting and fusing glass


Melting or fusing glass is done above 800°C. The glass is so hot that it takes on all the details of the substrate and allows special structures to be created. In fusing, several sheets of glass melt together. By applying multiple colours, very artistic work can be created.

Some applications: glass artworks, lighting, interior accessories, business gifts.

Glass printing

Edges, texts and images can be printed on glass by us. Images can be printed in several colours using our screen printing technique. But company logos or simple edge printing are also possible. Pictures by means of rough screening give a nice and special effect. We can also spray paint on glass.

We use ceramic paint that fuses with the glass at a high temperature. This makes the paint adhere extremely well and the printed glass can also be used outdoors.

Glass printing is used in:

promotional gifts with logo,
gift items.

Glass blasting

Glass blasting is also often called sandblasting. This is not entirely correct because it is not sand but a fine powder of aluminium oxide that is used to mattify the glass in a directional blast. An even surface can be blasted, patterns, but also a deeply irradiated text, a company logo or even an image in several shades. A protective coating prevents stains on the sandblasted glass caused by dirty fingers or other dirt.

Application: lighting, grave monuments, mirrors, gift items.

Cutting glass to size

Is done in-house by us, waterjet cut glass is sourced as needed.

Cutting glass

Glass cutting is traditionally done by applying an even scratch to the surface and then buckling the glass sheet so that the scratch is under tensile stress. This tension causes the glass plate to break precisely on the scratch. Cutting with water sample is also increasingly common these days.

Cutting ceramic glass to size

Ceramic glass is also cut by us. Water-jet cut ceramic glass is sourced as needed.

Glass bonding

We bond glass with ultra violet (UV) curing adhesive. Depending on the application, with a flexible, hard, heat-resistant, capillary or gap-filling adhesive. It is always an invisible glue joint.

Where necessary, we can bring in colleagues from our network for processing we do not do, such as water sample cutting, laminating and cnc model grinding.
